The SRM Technology Transfer Office (TTO) shall facilitate the transfer of knowledge, innovations, and technologies from research institutions to industry and society. This document outlines a detailed process for the effective management of technology transfer activities, ensuring compliance with legal, ethical, and organizational policies.

Detailed Process

1: Disclosure of Invention

1. Invention Detail Form Submission:

  • Researchers shall submit the patent whose product development stage is above TRL 3 to the TTO, detailing the innovation, inventors, and funding sources.
  • TTO will ask the inventor to fill a tech brief & an invention detail collection form that should include potential applications, inventiveness, benefits, existing publications, and prior art searches.

2. Important: Inventors must not engage with the industry independently without the knowledge or presence of TTO officials.

3. Acknowledgment of Receipt:

  • The TTO shall acknowledge receipt of the tech brief & the Invention Detail form and assign a unique identification number for tracking.

2: Preliminary Assessment

1. Initial Review:

  • TTO shall assess the completeness of the Tech Brief and IDC form and schedule an inventor meeting for clarification if needed.

2. Technology & IP Evaluation:

  • TTO will conduct prior art searches and market analysis to evaluate the novelty, utility, and commercial potential.
  • Assess potential regulatory requirements.

3: Marketing and Commercialization

1. Development of Marketing Materials:

  • The TTO will help create non-confidential summaries and promotional materials to showcase the technology's value.

2. Outreach to Potential Licensees:

  • TTO will Identify and engage with industry partners, investors, and collaborators.

3. Negotiation of Agreements:

  • The TTO will negotiate licensing terms, royalties, and other agreements (e.g., non-disclosure agreements, material transfer agreements) on behalf of the Inventor.

4. License Execution and Monitoring:

  • The TTO will execute agreements, track compliance, payments, and performance metrics from both the inventors as well as the Licensee

4: Startup Support (If Applicable)

In case the Inventor chooses to develop the product independently through his/her own startup, the TTO and the Directorate of Entrepreneurship in Innovation will support the inventor in part or whole of the following.

1. Business Plan Development:

  • Assist inventors in developing a robust business plan for spin-off companies.

2. Mentorship and Funding:

  • Provide access to mentors, incubators, and funding opportunities (e.g., grants, venture capital).

3. Equity Management:

  • Define institutional equity shares and manage conflicts of Interest.

5: Post-Commercialization Monitoring

1. Compliance Tracking:

  • Monitor agreements for compliance with terms, including milestone achievements and revenue sharing.

2. Impact Assessment:

  • Conduct periodic evaluations of societal, financial, and industrial impacts.

3. Dispute Resolution:

  • Address conflicts or disputes arising during the commercialization lifecycle.

6: Stakeholder Communication

1. Regular Updates:

  • Provide Inventors, administrators, and other stakeholders with updates on technology transfer activities.

7. Legal and Ethical Considerations

1. Compliance with Regulations:

  • Ensure adherence to national and international IP laws, export controls, and funding agency requirements.

2. Conflict of Interest Management:

  • Identify and manage potential conflicts involving inventors, licensees, and institutional interests.

8. Performance Metrics

  • Licensing revenue generated.
